Failures of Wet Wipes Packing Machine and Solutions
After it has been used for a long time, especially in the situation of continuous operation and overload operation, a wet wipes packing machine is prone to some electrical and mechanical failures, such as infirm sealing, intermittent machine shutdown, blown fuse upon startup, squeak during operation, uncontrollable temperature, sachet seal being out of shape and bent, bubbles or irregular marks at the seal, and more. Combined with our experience of the practical operation of the machine, we come up with some failures of the wet wipes packing machine, the causes of them and solutions to them, as well as maintenance and repair problems of the machine.
1. Infirm sealing
Infirm sealing is a common failure of an automatic sealing machine, one of which is the wet wipes packing machine. This failure can be divided into three types.
1) The sachet cannot be sealed.
a. Low heat sealing temperature
Normally, the heat sealing temperature should reach 170-180°C when the composite film has OPP as its inner layer and is 80-90μm thick or reach 180-200°C when the composite film has PE as its inner layer and is 85-100μm thick. As the composite film thickness increases, the heat sealing temperature should be increased correspondingly.
b. High machine speed
The film cannot be sealed either due to high machine speed. When the speed is high, the film has been pulled to the cold pressing station by the pulling roller and is cooled before the film edge part to be sealed can be heated.
c. Inappropriate cold pressing rubber roller pressure
A cold-pressing roller is installed on either side of the machine. The pressure between them should be moderate. Operators can also screw the spring to adjust the pressure.
d. Bad quality of the film
Film quality will also influence the sealing effect. If the corona treatment of the inner layer of the composite is not uniform and non-uniform corona treatment exactly appears at the seal, certainly, the film cannot be sealed. This situation is rare but the product will be scrapped once it occurs. This is the reason why it’s the downstream processes that play the role of monitoring the upstream processes in the color printing and packaging industry. Upon the occurrence of a film quality problem, the causes should be analyzed and solutions, be given.
Besides, water and dirt at the seal will also lead to infirm sealing. All in all, to solve the first situation of infirm sealing, machine users can take steps of increasing the heat sealing temperature, slowing down the machine, and increasing the cold pressing roller pressure. As to the film, common packing film can have qualified quality. It’s not common for some users to buy cheap inferior film or that errors occur in the film production process. If the three steps above are of no use, however, it’s time to consider the problems of the film. By buying film made from the same material of another batch from the previous supplier or buying film made from the same material from another supplier and testing it on the machine, the machine users can get an answer.
2) The sealing boards seal sachets but the seal splits easily when being pressed or torn slightly.
a. Low heat sealing temperature. This problem can be solved by properly increasing the heat sealing temperature.
b. Uneven plane of heat sealing boards. There are two pieces of heat sealing boards. Normally thermal couplings are installed in them to induce heat conduction. And there are three bolts on either board. The middle bolt can support and fix the board and the other two bolts are installed with compression springs and spacers for pressure adjustment. Each board has two springs. The main cause of the uneven plane of the heat sealing boards is that the middle bolt is not level.
Another cause is that the compression springs bear different pressure. The solution is to readjust the position of the middle bolt to make it level. If the upper and lower heat sealing boards are not balanced, adjust the compressing spring to balance them. Move the spring outwards and the heat sealing board will fall. Fasten the spring of the lower board and the sealing boards will move upwards.
c. Non-uniform pressure of the cold pressing rubber rollers will also cause the second failure of infirm sealing. The solution to this problem is similar to that of the first type of failure.
3) The sachet edge is half sealed and half not. This means that the sealing quality is not qualified. The content inside the sachets will leak out while being pressed during transport and storage. This third failure often occurs when the inner layer of the composite film is OPP or PE film is blown and molded.
a. Non-uniform heat sealing board pressure or non-uniform cold pressing roller pressure might cause this problem.
b. Uneven heat sealing board plane is the other cause for the failure. The solution to this failure is the same as that to the second type of failure.
