5. Difference between olive oil and other oil( advantage of olive oil)

1) Different nutrient contents. Olive oil contains more than 80% monounsaturated fatty acid and even 55-83% oleic acid. This content is the highest among all vegetable oils. For example, content of oleic acid in canola oil is 12-18%, in peanut oil 42-62% and in corn oil 28-32%. Besides, olive oil contains ω -3 and ω -6 which cannot be synthesized by human body and the ratio between the both is 1:4. This ratio is exactly reasonable for health of human body. On the other hand, canola oil, bean oil, corn oil and peanut oil contains too much ω -6. It lead to a severe unbalance in essential fatty acid digestion. The ratio of digested ω -3 to ω -6 can even reach 1:20-1:30. In this case, ω -6 is severely out of limits. The unbalanced diet makes us feel more suffering even though we have better life quality. In addition, olive oil is the oil whose VE content is the highest and the only oil which contains antioxidant substances such as squalene.

2) Different producing way. Olive oil is cold extracted physically to maintain all nutrients, while most of other traditional oils are refined chemically, which will cause to some nutrient loose.

3) Different eating ways. Olive oil is actually a kind of oily fruit. It can be used during cooking, frying, steaming, or cold dressing. We can even drink extra virgin olive oil directly. However, other kinds of edible oil can be eaten only after being heated.

4) Different application. Olive oil is always used as edible oil, health-care oil or skin-care oil. And other oils usually only have the first function.

5) Olive oil is olive extracted from woody plant and other oils are refined from herbs.

6. How to distinguish olive oil through labels?

1) Class

Product labels will show olive class in its ingredient list. For example, if it is marked with “extra virgin olive oil”, the olive oil belongs to the class of extra virgin.

2) Origin

There are two ways to distinguish origin.

a. Country code: The first 1 to 3 figures in product bar code is the code for countries. For example, 69 represents for China, 84 for Spain, 80-80 for Italy and 52 for Greece...

b. CIQ: For example, original imported products to China is stuck with CIQ laser labels after verification of China Inspection and Quarantine, while products to be portioned and packed in China will not labeled with CIQ labels.

3) Years and date

There are two critical dates for olive oil, namely, year of olive oil and packing date.

a. Originally imported olive oil is marked with these two date: the year in which olive fruits mature and the bottling date for packing in factories.

b. Olive oil produced and sold in China: there are three dates: fruit year (GS), packing date (BZ) in foreign factories and packing date (FZ) in China.

The information marked with √ should be shown on products. Portioning and packing date should be shown only on products portioned and packed domestically. It’s the date when domestic filling factories portion and pack oil into small-specification packages. In general, letters of FZ are marked before the date. Besides, the shelf life starts from packing date instead of portioning date.
