How to choose cartoning machine

1. Vertical vs. Horizontal

The cartoning machine should match the products. For example, if the product are of good viscosity (including granules such as washing powder, or loose goods such as cough syrup bottles), vertical cartoning machine should be your choice. However, to some products which can be cartoned both vertically and horizontally, the horizontal machine is better. Most cartoning machines in the market are horizontal. Compared with vertical machines, the horizontal ones are more flexible and cheaper.

2. The max. Cartoning machine

First of all, it should be confirmed whether cartoning is finished on-line or off-line. The on-line speed can be calculated by dividing the max. production speed by the product quantity in every carton. Besides, cartoning capacity (the possibility of improving production speed through new procedures or technologies) should be taken into consideration. On the other hand, the off-line speed can be calculated with the daily, weekly or monthly conveying quotas and the weekly or monthly actual operating length.

3. Material

What is the material of your cartons, raw cardboard (new fiber, more expensive) or recycled materials (cheaper)? The material of bad quality must have influence on cartoning. Besides, you should also take the design of carton cover slab and gluing. If the cartons are spliced, less glue can be used. When a sachet is cartoned, an impact will be generated on material. Two measures can be helpful to solve this problem. One is to install a pressure reducer on the sachet making machine; and the other is to install a sachet specifying device at the cartoning section of the machine. No matter which method you choose, you should prepare it in advance but not solve this problem until the machine is put into production. In addition, the machine cartoning performance can be tested through products and cartons which conform to specifications exactly. Therefore, you can how much air can be contained in a sachet.

4. The experience and know-how of the suppliers.

Your carton supplier can join your project team. These material experts and equipment experts together can bring you great benefit. Sometimes, a small change on the carton design, material and glue can improve the cartoning performance greatly. And sometimes, if the equipment can do special design to equipment, you can then optimize your carton design and use thinker material to save cost.

5. Cartoning machine equivalent to your technical capacity

The cartoning machine should be equivalent to your technical capacity. If it is too comprehensive to be understood by you, such as some machine with many servo, the machine will bring you many troubles. Besides, background check done to the supplier and the suggestions from fellow companies can help you to make decision. You should know not only if your products can match the technology of supplier, but also the equipment limitations.

6. Rotary material feeding device

This question is often ignored. However, you should know if the rotary material feeding device is compatible with your material. If not, all of your following attempt is in vain.

7. Rear cartoning vs. Side cartoning

The production speed of rear cartoning is usually too quick. If your products can be controlled and slide into smaller rear opening easily, you can choose rear cartoning. On the other hand, if you need to carton more than one materials, side cartoning machine is more proper.

8. Change of parts

When you want to carton products of another size, how can be the change speed quicker? Have you marked and classified your machine parts with different colors? Are the parts for products of the same size marked with the same color? Don’t forget to mark your machine parts. In addition, you should store these parts orderly to find them out quickly.

9. Spare parts

If permitted, Key Spare Part List and Recommended Spare Part List can be supplied by your supplier. These spare parts can be delivered with the machine. Therefore, any abnormality during the machine using period can be solved quickly. You should also check these two files to know what parts you have then and what can be bought from the local suppliers.

10. Your future demands

Will you need larger carton or cluster package? If your machine can only carton products of two size, you might purchase new machine in the future. It will cost you much to refit your machine. Therefore, you can buy some machine which is flexible and potential for your future production demand.
