St. David’s Day - Wales - March 1st

The four nations of United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland have their own national day and St. David’s Day is the national day of Wales. This festival is set to commemorate Dewi Sant who preached Christianity in Wales in the 6th century. Dewi Sant is respected as the guardian of this nation. Therefore, March 1st, when he passed away, was set as the national day of Wales, i.e., St. David’s Day.

 

Peach Flower Festival (Doll’s Festival) - Japan - March 3nd

Doll’s Festival is pronounced as Hina Matsuri in Japanese. As the name shows, it is a festival for young ladies. It used to be held on March. 3nd in lunar calender. But after the Meiji Reform, the festival date changed to March 3nd in Gregorian calendar. Actually, Hina Matsuri can be traced back to China’s Shangsi Festival. On that day, girls gather by the river and clean away their bad luck. Till now, in Japan, people connect this festival with peach flower so that Hina Matsuri is also known as Peach Flower Festival.

Day of Silence - Bali, Indonesia

Day of Silence is a traditional festival of Indonesia. It is held on the first crescent day after the middle third of March according to Sakha Almanac. It is also the day of new year for the people of Bali. Compared with the Chinese New Year, Day of Silence is pretty silent. The people will stay at home, meditate, no work, no TV and even no food.

 

Holi - North India, Nepal - March 10th

Holi is a traditional festival of India. Particularly, it is traditional new yer of India. This festival origins from Mahabharata, a well-known Indian epic. To celebrate the festival, people throw red powders made from flowers and greet the arrival of Spring. It symbols the end of Winter and arrival of Spring, as well as the success of justice against evilness.

 

Las Fallas - Spain - March 15th-19th

Las Fallas can be the wildest festival in Europe. In celebration, people will burn paperboard dolls named falla to resist authority of church, heavy tax of government and some other outrageous facts. The festival celebration last for almost a week. People can take part in many activities, such as firework show, procession and offering flowers to their Lady. At the end of 2016, Las Fallas was included into Human Intangible Culture Heritage by UNESCO.

St. Patrick’s Day - Ireland - March 17th

Sr. Patrick’s Day is a festival to commemorate St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. It began in the late 5th century and now is National Day of Ireland. Till now, St. Patrick’s Day is a festival not only held in Ireland, but in other parts of the world. For instance, it started to be celebrated on March, 17th, 1737 in America. Some symbols of this festival are shamrocks and legendary Leprechauns.

 

Maple Sugar Festival - Canada

Maple Sugar Festival is one of the two most characteristic festivals. The other one is Carnival. Canada is famous for its maple, especially maple in Quebec and Ontario. Canadian have deep feeling to maple, which is even the symbol of the state. Besides, maple is also a origin of sugar. Therefore, the state sets Maple Sugar Festival in each March, when maple sugar is collected and stewed.
