National Day – Sri Lanka – Feb. 4

Sri Lanka is a country of long history. In BC463, Kingdom of Simhalauipa was founded. However, it had been colonized by Portugal, Netherland and Britain one after another since 1505. Till the end of Second World War, the people of Sri Lanka struggled for their own autonomy from Britain. In 1947, Britain was compelled to approve the proposal which demanded that Sri Lanka be an autonomous area of the British Commonwealth. On Feb. 4th of the next year, Sri Lanka declared its independence.

To celebrate National Day every year, 21 guns are fired in Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka. Drums and snails can be heard. Meanwhile, some campaign is held and honor guard grouping members from Navy, Army and Air Force, together with people from all walks of life participates in it. President also gives an important speech or announcement to the whole nation. The people of Sri Lanka also celebrate their National Day with all kinds of activities.

National Day – New Zealand – Feb. 6

It is also known as Waitangi Day, since on Feb. 6, 1840, Maoris singed Treaty of Waitangi, leaving the country a colony of Britain.

 

Foundation Day – Japan – Feb. 11

It was said that Emperor Jimmu, the first Japan Emperor, was enthroned on Feb. 11, which was then seen as the start of Japan. Therefore, Feb. 11 is now made Foundation Day of Japan.

Tet-Festival – Vietnam – Feb. 15

Vietnamese also celebrate their lunar spring festival, which is called Tet-Festival, rather than Chinese New Year. Actually, Vietnamese don’t like to confuse their Tet-Festival with Chinese New Year. Beside Vietnam, other countries, such as Korea, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia, which are influenced deeply by Chinese culture, Spring Festival is legitimate holiday.

 

Presidents’ Day – USA – Feb. 19

Presidents’ Day is one of the ten legal holidays of USA. It is celebrated on the third Monday of every February. It enjoys the equal status with Memorial Day and Thanksgiving Day. For each President’ Day, Americans will relive their history and cherish the memory of their high respected and great presidents in special way. In addition, schools will work with parents to educate kids for their patriotism knowledge to American history.

Day of Defender of the Fatherland – Russia – Feb. 23

Every Feb. 23 is Day of Defender of the Fatherland (День защитника Отечества) of Russia, as well as Army Day of Soviet Red Army. It is the holiday of all Servicemen or Veterans. After disintegration of the Soviet Union, it becomes the holiday of all men and is viewed as Men’s Day in Russia. Then, the female give gifts to all of their male relatives or friends. Female classmates or employees will give a small gift to their male classmates or colleagues one day before or after the holiday.

National Day – Kuwait – Feb. 25

On Feb. 25, 1961, Kuwaiti was independent from Britain and set out on the road of independence and prosperity. As a result, Feb. 25 is prescribed as National Day of Kuwait. And the next day, i.e., Feb. 26, is Liberation Day of Kuwait. Kuwaiti will have a holiday for two days to take part in grand celebration.
