Chinese New Year is one of the four traditional festivals in China. It is also named Spring Festival, because its coming indicates that the season of Spring, as well as new age is coming. However, our festival preparation can start from the twenty-third day of the lunar December. And only Festival of Lanterns can end it. During these almost three weeks, people organizes a series of activities. And foodies can satisfy themselves completely.

Kids are happy for red envelops, which are put under their pillows to protect them from a traditional legendary monster named “Nian”. Colorful firework bloomed in night also delight those kids. Different from them, adults always gather beside stoves and watch TV together. For some of them, maybe only the song of Unforgettable Tonight (It is sung by Li Guyi, a famous singer in China, on CCTV Spring Festival Gala Evening) can represent the passing of the previous year and the coming of the next year.

In the first tens of days of a new year, people are busy visiting their relatives and friends, as well as enjoying delicious food. It’s not hard to find that your friends from China gain weight after the festival.

Also, we have so many legends about our traditional New Year. “Nian” is one of them. It was said that long long ago, a monster named “Nian” raged. The monster appeared in the New Year’s Eve and was very cruel and bloodthirsty. But our clever ancestors invented firecracker with which defeated the monster. Our ancestors also thought that the color of red could protect them so that kid would gain red envelops and people started to put in red during the festival.

Another legend is about the 12 symbolic animals. When infants are born, their parents will describe them as “rats”, “tigers”... (without intended defense). Such a nickname is just related to the 12 animals. It is also a story happening long long ago. One day, a race was held and all animals could participate. After fierce competition, a rat reached the destination first, followed by ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig in order. To reward them, these 12 animals were appointed to guard people every year orderly. In the new year of 2020, rat will come back to guard us. And if babies are born then, they will be nicknamed little rats. So cute!
